Step by step guide to set up Microsoft Authenticator as a Two-factor method.

Microsoft Authenticator is one of the preferred authentication methods to keep your WordPress account safe from any security threat. Let’s get started with the setup to configure the miniOrange Microsoft authenticator method.

Follow these steps to set up the Microsoft Authenticator method:-

Case1: After plugin activation

  • Go to your WordPress instance and log in as an administrator.
  • After activating the plugin, click on the Let’s Get Started button.

  • Here, you can see the various authentication methods available in the free version of the miniOrange 2-factor plugin along with Microsoft Authenticator as one of these
  • Choose Microsoft authenticator and then click on the save and continue button.

The process is divided into two steps:-
Step 1. Download “Microsoft authenticator app” from the respective play stores.
Step 2. Now, open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone and select scan a QR code. After that, scan the given QR code with the Microsoft Authenticator app and enter the security code in the space provided.
  • Click on the Save and Continue button for verification.

Case 2: Inside plugin dashboard

  • If you have already installed the plugin then click on the miniOrange 2-factor plugin visible in the menu to the left.

  • Go to the Set-up Two Factor tab in the navigation panel at the top and then click on the Configure button present underneath the Microsoft Authenticator tile.

The process is divided into two steps:-
Step 1. Download “Microsoft authenticator app” from the respective play stores.
Step 2. Now, open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone and select scan a QR code. After that, scan the given QR code with the Authenticator app and enter the security code in the space provided.
  • In the following case click on the save and continue button.

  • After this setup, whenever you try to log in to your account. Microsoft authenticator gets prompted as a second security layer when logging into WordPress.

  • For any new login, you need to enter the security code shown in the authenticator app and click on the validate button to log in to the site.

  • Now your account is secure and you can log in only after verification.

In-line Registration For Users

  • Administrators can enable two-factor authentication methods for users. Click on the Settings button from the navigation panel at the top. Scroll down and select the checkbox in front of their role.

  • While logging in, the user has to first enter his credentials.

  • After entering credentials, the user is prompted with the two-factor setup and can configure any two-factor method of his choice. I have selected Microsoft Authenticator.

  • Scan the QR code with the Microsoft Authenticator app installed in your phone and after the account is added scan the QR code.
  • Enter the secret code shown in your app in the space provided and then click on the verify and save button.

  • Download the backup codes and you will be logged in.
